Can you be too young, too attractive and too “regional” for radio? There was much ruction online over the weekend following an article in The Spectator criticising Lauren Laverne’s tenure as host of Desert Island Discs (Radio 4, Sunday).  Melanie McDonagh wrote that Laverne was “lightweight and uncerebral”, “a face for television” and “the worst appointment Radio 4 has made in its apparent effort to alienate its listeners”, attributing Laverne’s recruitment to an attempt to attract younger listeners.
